Almost half of email opens are happening on smartphones, according to a new report from email services firm Movable Ink. The Q3 "Consumer Device Preferences Report" also revealed that 17 percent of emails are opened on tablets, which means that only 34 percent of emails are being opened on PCs. When it comes to the type of device, iOS devices dominate, capturing 59 percent of email opens.

The Irish government has asked the European Commission help deal with U.S. demands for Microsoft to turn over data stored on servers in Ireland. The DOJ is demanding the data as part of a drug trafficking investigation, but Microsoft contends that turning over user data stored in another country is a violation of privacy. "By seeking direct access to data held in the EU through the US judicial system, existing legal mechanisms for mutual assistance between jurisdictions may be being effectively bypassed," Dara Murphy, The Irish Minister for European Affairs and Data Protection, warned the European Commission.

The State Department has restored its main unclassified email system. The agency shut down the network on Friday in order to beef up security efforts after a breach in the system was discovered last month. "I can report that our external email services from our main unclassified system are now operating normally," State Department spokesman Jeff Rathke told The Hill.

Last week The State Department shut down its email system to fix potential damage after it was hacked. While the agency has yet to disclose who might be behind the attack, cyber security expert Peter Singer, told The Guardian that the breach "fits a pattern of known behavior" for Russian cyber-criminals.

The platform uses analytics to turn email into intelligent data that is used as a work collaboration tool. The idea is that the tool will help users see emails from the people that they communicate with most at the top of their inbox.

Digital rights advocates up in arms after AT&T subsidiary Cricket and prevented users from encrypting their emails allows them to pass through the Internet in plaintext. According to researchers, the ISP removed encrypting technology STARTTLS, from emails as they passed between servers. "It is important that ISPs immediately stop this unauthorized removal of their customers' security measures," wrote Jacob Hoffman-Andrews, a staffer at the Electronic Frontier Foundation in a blog post. The United Socialist Party of Venezuela, PSUV, has created an email address and phone number for citizens to use to report on "infiltrators" within the party. The country's ruling party chose a Gmail address to receive these communications. "The militant who is fomenting disunity should be denounced through denunciainfiltradospsuv@gmail.com, and via SMS [text] at 0416-9425792," Francisco Ameliach, vice president of electoral issues for the PSUV and governor of Carabobo state, tweeted last week.

Nonprofit Organizing for Action is paying $5 million for a four-year agreement to rent the Obama campaign's email list. The list, which was built during the president's successful campaign efforts, includes more than 30 million subscribers. Obama raised $1 billion during his 2012 campaign and more than $500 million of that sum came in through email and web donations.
