Yahoo is previewing its latest email security tool End-to-End, an effort the tech giant developed in conjunction with Google. While both email providers already encrypt emails that are in transit, this new feature allows email senders to encrypt messages stored on the service provider's servers. This protects Yahoo from having to turn private user data over to the authorities, because they don't have plain text files stored on their files and even they can't read the messages.

Bitcoin wallet site Coinbase has had one of its email addresses hacked into. Hackers have used the Coinbase email address news@coinbase.com to send spam messages. The spam messages promote a fake new product called Coinbase Invest Fund, and link to a malicious site.

Nevada politicians Paul Anderson and Mo Denis have sponsored a bill that would require all of the state's government internet traffic to remain within the state's borders. The idea is that all state employee emails would remain on servers within Nevada. Las Vegas-based data center firm Switch, who may get the contract for the job, is the only entity to come out and support the bill as of yet.

After a number of politicians have come in the spotlight for how the used email to conduct official business from Hillary Clinton to Chris Christie, lawmakers have been rethinking email policy. Many states lack official email policies and the rules that define how email is used fall under public records rulings. The White House itself only established an official email policy in 2013. As scandals arise, we are likely to see more official policies erected across government organizations.

Marketers see an average of 222 percent ROI on the cost of their email services according to Venture Beat. Yet, 39 percent of marketers report not tracking revenues generated through email. It's no surprise then that marketers plan to use more of email in 2015, as compared to any other channel. In fact, the research found that almost 70 percent of marketers will increase their use of email this year.

Email startup Clearbit has raised $2 million in seed funding from First Round Capital. The company has raised the cash to help fund its tool which allows users to see the name of the person behind an email address or company domain very quickly and easily. The tool can be use to help companies determine the level of importance of inbound sales leads since they can see exactly who is interested.

CRM services firm Intelliverse has introduced a new toolset to help sales people more strategically track leads via email. The Email Tracker tool lets sales people see how, when and where their marketing emails are opened and clicked on in the same way that email marketing platforms can do. Using these metrics b-to-b marketers can strategically plan when and follow up on leads.

The Russian government hacked into the White House's email system this week revealing that an email breach from last year could have been more concerning than previously thought. CNN points out that The State Department and the White House revealed last year that suspicious activity had taken place on their networks and even though only unclassified systems were affected, that does include non-public information such as Obama's schedule. The White House claims that this is just speculative and has played down concerns.

Email marketing services firm Emma has acquired email startup Boomerang, in a deal whose terms were not disclosed. Boomerang offers a tool that allows customers to control when they send and receive email messages by integrating an app into their email inboxes. Emma covers email automation, with a Salesforce.com integration. This acquisition brings Emma the tools to do cloud-based plugins. Boomerang customers will now have access to Emma's platform.

The University of California Riverside has revealed that a stolen computer has exposed the personal information of 8,000 people. The computer included personal details including email addresses. The school has notified those people that were affected, which were mostly graduate students and graduate school applicants.
