• The Inventor of Email Has Died
    Raymond Tomlinson, the creator of email, has died. His company Raytheon Co. revealed the news over the weekend. Tomlinson is credited with sending the first network person-to-person email back in 1971 using the ARPANET system.
  • Facebook May Have Messenger App in the Works
    Facebook has reportedly build a new Facebook Messenger app for Mac desktop computers, according to a report in TechCrunch. The tech blog published photos of this yet-to-be released tool in use by a Facebook employee. The app could potentially make it easier for Facebook users to send messages on their computers. Facebook would not comment on the rumor.
  • CRM App Hiver Now Offers Users Email Metrics
    Hiver, a CRM app that turns Gmail into a customer support and collaboration tool, has updated its service to allow users to track email engagement. The tool will now allow users to measure email opens and clicks. In addition, the company also has an iOS tool in the works that is expected to drop in late April.
  • News Curation App Skift Adds Email Alerts For Specific Storylines
    News curation app Skift has added a new email newsletter feature. The app allows users to follow specific news stories by clicking on the "Follow this storyline" button and then subscribe to email digests that cover the particular news item. The app will send email alerts when new angles on the news is published.
  • Lavabit Reemerges to Support Apple
    Email encryption service Lavabit is making a comeback. The crowd-funded service, which provided up to 400,000 people with encrypted email, emerged after NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden revealed how the government spies on citizens. Snowden was supposedly a client of Lavabit. The company shut down in 2013 after it faced legal pressure from the FBI. The company has emerged again this week to defend Apple as the Cupertino-based tech giant fights the FBI's demands to unlock San Bernardino shooter Syed Rizwan Farook's iPhone.
  • SparkPost Ups Its Free Email Offering
    Cloud email delivery provider SparkPost has released a transactional email service which allows marketers to send 100,000 emails per month for free. Previously, the company only offered 10,000 emails per month for free.
  • Former Clinton Staffer Strikes Deal with DOJ in Email Investigation
    Bryan Pagliano, a former State Department staffer and Hillary Clinton campaign employee, has been granted immunity by the Department of Justice in exchange for talking to investigators about Clinton's use of a private email server while serving as Secretary of State. The staffer had been of interest to the FBI and congressional committees as part of their investigation into Clinton's use of the private server for official business.
  • The Skimm Founders Explore Beyond Email
    Carly Zakin and Danielle Weisberg, the founders of the popular email newsletter The Skimm, aren't totally satisfied with a newsletter with 1.5 million opens. In an interview with Re/code, the pair said that email is only one of many digital channels they use to reach their audience.

    AdRoll has launched a new tool to help bring the company's retargeting capabilities to email. The new feature, called SendRoll, allows businesses to send personalized emails with things like product recommendations based on the user's behavior. Clients use their own email lists and apply AdRoll's retargeting technology on top.
