A hacker named Mastermind has stolen and published more than 20 million email addresses from dating websites in order to point out how many fake profiles exist on data sites. He told IBTimes UK, that his intention was not to sell this stolen information but to show how online dating sites need to clean up their databases.

The site has sent a letter to Google CEO Eric Schmidt saying that they were "astonished and disturbed" that Google waited until now to disclose this information.

Midwestern cable provider Mediacom has been suffering technical issues, leaving some customers unable to access their email accounts. The telecommunications company said that the issue stemmed from a data transfer between servers. However, an unrelated problem led to the delay in the transfer. Only a small number of customers were affected and the company is working to address the problem.

More than 90 percent of the data breaches that happened in the first half of 2014 could have been prevented if businesses had a strong risk prevention plan in order, says the Online Trust Alliance (OTA). In a new report from OTS, entitled, 2015 Data Protection Best Practices and Risk Assessment Guides, the organization revealed that 40 percent of data breaches that included exposure of personally identifiable information (PII) were caused by external intrusions.

These companies also got more proactive about list building, encouraging web visitors to sign up for their lists as soon as they entered their site. According to the report, personalized emails sent by the Top 500 retailers was up 22.2 percent in 2014.
