Despite the fact that they should know better, about a third of consumers are clicking on emails that appear to be spam, according to a new report from email security firm TNS Global for Halon. For the report, the company surveyed 1,000 users, and about 10 percent of the participants said that they had already infected their computer by opening a spam email attachment.

About half of marketing emails are opened on mobile devices and the other half are opened on computers, according to a new report from Yesmail. The study, which looked at more than 5 billion marketing emails sent by Yesmail clients in Q2 2013, found that 49% of emails were opened on mobile devices and 51% were opened on computers. According to the report, desktop emails garnered a 23% open rate, while mobile emails only had an 11% open rate. The report also revealed that 61% of consumers read at least some of their emails on a mobile device.

Government officials may continue to use secret government email accounts to conduct official business so long as they archive the messages and share them when a Freedom of Information Act request is administered. The National Archives and Records Administration announced these new rules after the Associated Press revealed that some Obama administration political appointees used secret government email accounts that were not publicly disclosed.

Lavabit, the encrypted email service reportedly used by Edward Snowden that closed down after receiving government pressure, will go to court next month. Lavabit founder Ladar Levison raised more than $100,000 help pay for attorneys and appeal a surveillance order, that required him to shut down the company. The case is currently under seal, but Levison's opening brief is set for October 3rd.

The National Archives has defended the practice of government officials holding multiple official email accounts and the using personal accounts in some situations, but the organization requires that officials use their business email addresses for official business correspondence in order that the records can be kept accurately. In a hearing on government secrecy, Lisa Jackson, the former EPA administrator, defended her use of using personal email at work. At the House Oversight and Government hearing she explained that she was not the first government employee to use a personal email account at work. "I had a secondary official government account like my predecessors before me, and that was done for time management and to be able to do my job," she said. Scammers are taking advantage of the popularity of Android and sending malicious emails that distribute Android scareware. These apps use scare tactics to trick users into paying for unnecessary services. Security vendor FireEye has identified a spam campaign that kicked off on September 6th and continues to show up in inboxes. The spam emails claim to be failed package delivery notifications from USPS or electronic wedding invitations and link to websites. The email solicits recipients to download an Android package (APK) file called LabelReader.apk which will install FakeDefender, a tool that pretends to be a commercial Android security product but …

Unroll.me, an app that is designed to help users organize their email inboxes, has upgraded its service and has added new integrations with AOL and iCloud. The app already supports Gmail and Yahoo. The app allows users to say which types of emails they want to receive and which they want to unsubscribe from and then it weeds out unwanted apps.

German newspaper Spiegel has reported that it has seen top secret NSA documents which reveal that the US government has been able to access the BlackBerry email system. BlackBerry's email is supposedly encrypted and lives on a secure server and on its phones. The company denies that it has given the NSA back door access to its email platform.
