Scammers are taking advantage of the popularity of Android and sending malicious emails that distribute Android scareware. These apps use scare tactics to trick users into paying for unnecessary services. Security vendor FireEye has identified a spam campaign that kicked off on September 6th and continues to show up in inboxes. The spam emails claim to be failed package delivery notifications from USPS or electronic wedding invitations and link to websites. The email solicits recipients to download an Android package (APK) file called LabelReader.apk which will install FakeDefender, a tool that pretends to be a commercial Android security product but …

Half of all email marketing messages are opened on the mobile phone, according to a new report from Experian. The Q2 Email Benchmark Study released by Experian Marketing Services last week also revealed that iOS devices are leading the pack when it comes to mobile email. iPhone users made up 68 percent of mobile unique opens and 57 percent of clicks. The iPhone also accounted for 40 percent of mobile email transactions. The iPad garnered 48 percent of transactions, but only 19 percent of emails were opened on the iPad.

A spam email is making the rounds claiming that the United States has already begun bombing Syria. According to Kaspersky Lab, the email first started hitting inboxes on Friday morning in the morning East Coast time. The email contains malware and if a recipient clicks on the links within the email, they will inadvertently download a Trojan onto their computers. Email users are advised to flag the email as spam and avoid opening or clicking any links in the malicious message.
