• Florida Warns State Residents of Insurance Scam Email
    The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation (OIR) and the Department of Financial Services (DFS) have warned state residents to beware of an email scam that claims to come from Insurance Commissioner David Altmaier. The spam message says that the recipient's policies have been cancelled. "OIR does not send notices of cancellation and those who receive this email should disregard the information. Consumers should not click on any links contained with the email message, and should immediately delete the email," the group said in a statement.
  • House Oversight Committee Heads Battle Over Clinton Email
    House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) and the committee's top Democrat Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) have been battling over the Clinton email investigation. Chaffetz has called on the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia to investigate if Clinton or her team illegally destroyed records. Meanwhile, Cummings has been pointing to Colin Powell's guidance to Clinton on how to run a private server.
  • Two North Carolina Men Arrested for Hacking Email Account of CIA Director
    Two men from North Carolina have been arrested for allegedly hacking into the personal email accounts of the director of the CIA and two other officials. The men were accused of working for the hacking group, Crackas With Attitude, to break into these accounts. Prosecutors claim that the hackers broke into these email accounts between October 2015 and February 2016.

    The Department of Justice granted immunity to an IT expert that deleted Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's emails during its investigation of her use of a private email server. Republicans have asked the agency to investigate deleted emails, but because of the deal, the request will likely not proceed.

    The U.S. House Oversight & Government Reform Committee has called out the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) for blames jeopardizing U.S. national security in a new report of the agency's massive data breach. OPM exposed the data of millions of American government employees for several years. The breach was first publicly disclosed in mid-2015.
  • Holiday Email Volume Increased in 2015, As Engagement Went Down
    The number of retailers that sent holiday-themed email messages increased 13.4 percent in 2015, as compared to 2014, according to Yesmail. While the number of campaigns increased, engagement went down. The report looked at data from 30 major retailers collected between June 1 and December 31 in 2014 and 2015.
  • Conferma Brings Email Payments to B-to-B Companies
    Virtual payment company Conferma is working on a new tool that will allow b-to-b companies to make payments via email. Currently the industry relies on fax transactions but the new tool will allow suppliers to receive virtual card confirmation via encrypted email.
  • Microsoft Working on Slack-Like Tool
    Microsoft is reportedly working on a new collaboration tool that will be released under the Skype brand. Like Slack, the tool will aim to be a non-email oriented communication platform for employees to do team work on. The product is still under wraps but it is expected to feature chat tools, as well as social networking aspects.

    New light has been shed on former Secretary of State Colin Powell's advice to Hillary Clinton on using personal e-mail at work. In an email responding to Clinton's query, Powell wrote: "I didn't have a BlackBerry. What I did do was have a personal computer that was hooked up to a private phone line (sounds ancient.) So I could communicate with a wide range of friends directly without going through the State Department servers.   • India Adopts Digital Alerts to Court Filings
    Indian citizens that file a complaint or appeal under the Right to Information Act will now get an email or SMS update about their filing. The government has moved to a digital notification system for the court.
