Ladar Levison, the creator of the now-shuttered email encryption service Lavabit, has a new encryption tool available through his Dark Mail project called Dime. Dime uses multiple layers of cryptography in order to prevent spying eyes from reading an email's content or metadata as the message is sent from the sender to the recipient. The provider itself cannot read the emails, therefore preventing any law enforcement agency from requiring that the files be turned over.

Guntram Schneider, labor minister in Germany is pushing legislation that would ban work related phone calls and emails after business hours. The proposal comes as work stress has been a large topic of discussion in German media. Earlier this year, France passed similar legislation that bans after work emails for some workers in specific fields.

Google has made it easier for consumers to unsubscribe from email lists with a new unsubscribed button in all commercial messages. According to a post on Google +, this is as good for consumers as it is for marketers. "For email senders, their mail is less likely to be marked as spam and for you, you can now say goodbye to sifting through an entire message for that one pesky link," explained the post.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee raised $4.8 million last week after sending out a series of "red alert" emails to constituents. The emails had the all cap subject line "BREAKING: IMPEACHMENT," and stressed concerns over John Boehner's lawsuit against Barack Obama over executive actions. The dramatic effort worked, as it was the committee's best week for online fundraising this year.

At the Black Hat security conference this week, the companies revealed plans to work together to increase email encryption services across the web in order to fight against hackers and government spying. The new encryption service is expected the be up and running next year.

Security firm Malwarebytes has revealed a new email scam that claims to come from Facebook. The spam emails are intended to steal login credentials for the Facebook account and email account of the user. The emails include links to a malicious page that tells recipients that their Facebook account has been disabled and solicits personal information in order to get it turned back on.

The FBI seized has seized the email account of a former Ford Motor Company engineer as part of an investigation into a worker that hid recording devices in the company's conference rooms. The FBI was seeking all copies of the fired engineer's emails in a search warrant served to Ford.

Yesterday, security firm Hold Security revealed that 1.2 billion email addresses had been stolen by Russian hackers. Security expert Brian Krebs has responded to the news by posting answers to questions on his blog. In the post, he reveals that major spammers rely on lists of billions of email addresses in order to distribute malware. Should email users be concerned?
