• Creating A Contact Strategy
    Dear Email Diva: The agency I'm currently using seems to be finding it difficult (or lacks the desire?) to implement a contact strategy. We are left to using spreadsheets, plotting when emails are going out -- and to whom -- and estimating how many times we could be contacting one person on our database. Shouldn't it be straightforward to review email addresses and calculate the number of times that a person has been contacted -- and, from that information, delve deeper into their behavior?

Given that expectation and requirement, I think it's fair that marketers should also guarantee that new subscribers receive their first regular email within 10 business days of signing up. Call it a self-imposed CAN-SEND Act.

With so many companies managing multiple systems for email purposes, keeping opt-out files consistent and up-to-date can be a nightmare, especially if you add in acquisition through third parties. Here are some of the big issues that most email marketers will struggle with -- most just mumbling about; few are talking publicly since CAN SPAM gained notoriety in 2003.
